The UK will host the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) at the Scottish Event Centre, Glasgow from 1 – 12 November 2021.

The UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP) has been taking place yearly since 1995 and has taken place in a variety of countries over since then, including Germany, Morocco and Japan.

Each gathering of the conference is used to examine the reports and emission inventories submitted by each party, reviewing how each country is progressing in their commitment to deal with climate change. More information on COP and its history can be found on the United Nations Climate Change website

Glasgow was selected by the UK to host the 26th COP conference due to its experience, commitment to sustainability and world-class facilities. The COP26 summit will bring multiple countries together to assess and accelerate action towards the goals of both the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

M-Four is thrilled to announce that our Associate Director Dave Falla will be speaking at an EU side event at COP26.

The session, titled “How Civil Society and Businesses engage in Climate Action - and where Policymakers need to follow”, will be hosted in by M-Four in collaboration with other organisations who advocate for ambitious climate policies, and the implementation of innovative climate measures, on the ground that empower citizens to become part of the solution.

This session will take place virtually at 11.30am on 11th November 2021, and will be free to attend to participants from across the globe.  Click here to register.

The event will showcase how different stakeholders, particularly from civil society and the business sector, engage in national climate policies and implement concrete measures at the local level around the world. Case studies will specify where political, institutional and regulatory support is needed to mainstream and scale these experiences to raise climate ambition and create co-benefits.

Glasgow is a perfect location to host a sustainable and inclusive COP in 2021. With a target set for carbon neutral for 2030, the city is 4th in the world in the Global Destination Sustainability Index and aims to be one of the greenest cities in Europe through launching its city-wide People Make Glasgow Greener Strategy.

We are ecstatic to see the COP26 conference being held in Glasgow in 2021, as we are passionate about the sustainability of Scotland's cities. With our offices situated in Glasgow, the work we do in and around the city is something we are immensely proud of, and we grasp every opportunity we can find to talk about it.

President-Designate Speech

The COP26 President-Designate Alok Sharma gave a major speech in Paris, warning leaders that they must deliver in Glasgow, with the summit set to start on 31 October. The French capital is where the Paris Agreement was reached and the world agreed to avoid the worst effects of climate change by limiting global temperature rises well below 2C, aiming for 1.5C.

The presidency programme for COP26 will showcase momentum from the whole of society, and focus on key issues to drive ambition and action.

Key cross-cutting elements such as science and inclusivity will be incorporated throughout, ensuring that a balance of mitigation, adaptation and finance runs through the whole COP26 programme.

Allegra Stratton explains COP26

COP26 Spokeswoman Allegra Stratton takes you behind the scenes at Downing Street and sets out why COP26 matters.

COP26 fits with our goals…

Looking at the global warming index, we can see that the earth’s temperature is rapidly increasing, at a significantly quicker rate than it has done previously. It is imperative that we work together to ensure that this remains below 2 degrees to avoid the worst impacts of climate change.

We are passionate about engaging with COP26, in the fight to reduce carbon emissions both within our work areas and for our country as a whole, to secure the safety of our planet’s future.

Our Crazy Goal

We know that the world needs innovative businesses, who care about our planet, to step up and make a difference, which led us to creating our ‘crazy goal’: Eliminate Fuel Poverty, Save Lives and Improve the Health & Wellbeing of Social Housing Tenants in Scotland.

This goal aims to improve the lives of the 590,000 people living in social housing properties in Scotland.

Based on Scottish Government statistics, an estimated 25% of those households are living in Fuel Poverty, with a further 11.3% living in Extreme Fuel Poverty. We know that these standards of living are totally unacceptable, and we are on a mission to make a difference.

By targeting the heating inequality within Scotland, we hope to provide people with both safer, warmer housing and a better education on how to reduce energy wastage.

Each member of our specialist team is committed to working to achieve our Crazy Goals, whilst delivering the best quality service for each of our clients. We solve challenges collaboratively to improve the lives of other

Showcasing Sustainable Actionable Change – Event For Housing Leaders

In partnership with nghomes, we are pleased to present a unique event for social housing leaders, which will run every weekday during the COP26 conference, from 3pm - 9pm.

ng homes’, supported by the Scottish Government’s Social Housing Net-Zero Heat Fund and our partners, The McDermott Group, Easy Heat Systems and M-Four, would like to invite Social Housing Leaders to experience the work they have undertaken to improve the lives of their tenants in North Glasgow.

The event will give an insight into how the project was conceived, how funding applications were developed and how the system was installed and commissioned.

At 3pm, guests will be picked up at a suitable location in Glasgow, in a state-of-the-art, fully electric Mercedes-Benz eCitaro bus, the short distance to ng homes' properties in Springburn for an informative tour and account of their market leading project. They would welcome all questions on this project and encourage all delegates to be as inquisitive as possible during the tour.

Afterwards delegates will be driven to the Dakota Hotel EuroCentral for informal networking and a complimentary dinner at 6pm. To round off the day the bus will return to the original pick-up spot in Glasgow in the evening, around 9pm.

Places on the COVID-secure bus are limited.

Bookings are now open, and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. It will be free of charge to attend this event.

If you have any questions about the event or want to book your place, please do not hesitate to contact the event lead, Dave Falla at endfuelpoverty@m-four.org

Social Housing: The Race to Zero

Over the past five years, M-Four have been working closely with registered social landlords, providing consultancy services to improve energy efficiency for more than 18,000 properties across Scotland.

In the last twelve months we have helped several clients by developing feasibility studies and investment-grade business cases to secure over £15m of grant funding from the Scottish Government Low Carbon Infrastructure Transition Programme (LCITP) and the recently launched Social Housing Net Zero Heat Fund.

In tandem with additional soft loan funding from the Energy Saving Trust, our social housing clients have injected more than £30m of investment into housing regeneration, improving energy efficiency, tackling fuel poverty and energy inequality.
Our in-house consultants are experts in collecting information relating to housing stock condition, heating systems, energy conservation measures, and futhermore, we are all passionate about our ‘crazy’ goal of eradicating fuel poverty in Scotland.

Our expert consultants are on hand to help social housing providers roadmap their journey to EESSH2 compliance, so if we can help please get in touch.

Temperature and humidity within Social Housing

As part of an LCITP application, ng homes wanted to be able to monitor temperature and humidity within properties to carry out a before and after appraisal of heating consumption and fuel poverty, should they successfully win funding for the work.

To facilitate this, M-Four installed 600 Temperature and humidity sensors into more than 250 homes and the installation of 3 V2 LoRaWAN Gateways.

Utilising our highly-skilled team of data scientists, they were able to develop an interesting profile of heat consumption, proving that enhanced measures were required to retain heat in these properties. As part of the appraisal, we surveyed the tenants of properties with a sensor installed as to their health and wellbeing.

Our data scientists found a reverse heat profile in 63% of the properties with sensors installed. In other words, heat is not being retained after the heating is turned off and as a result, a secondary heating system must be used later in the day to restore heat into homes. In effect, tenants are paying double to heat their homes. The results of our health and wellbeing survey indicated that 68% of those polled reported being in fuel poverty, which reflected the results obtained through our data insight.

Additionally, we were able to monitor temperature and humidity spikes to identify when a secondary heating source was being used and, given the spike in humidity, we were alerted to the use of heating sources that use Calor gas bottles. This allows quick intervention by the Association.

Bringing energy efficient heating to Social Housing

In January 2020, we were appointed by Cloch Housing Association (CHA) to undertake an options appraisal for the replacement of a communal gas-fired heating system that served a flatted development of 15 properties.

At the time, the existing system was operational but had reached its expected operational life. Parts were now obsolete, and the underfloor heating system connecting to the boilers weren’t balanced, which was causing heating issues throughout the building.

We developed an options appraisal that examined a number of heating systems but narrowed down the field to the three most viable systems.

Options were presented to the client in a report, including details of CAPEX costs, lifecycle and running costs and energy efficiency. The report also provided a detailed spend profile for each system so that the client could budget accordingly. As part of the appraisal, we also discussed funding opportunities currently available through the Energy Saving Trust, DH Loan Fund and Renewable Heat Incentive.

Even within a tight deadline, we completed a comprehensive appraisal that will allow the client to make an informed decision on the option to best meet their needs.

Paul McGolgan, Property Services Manager, said “In 2019 Cloch Housing Association appointed M-Four to provide an options appraisal report for the renewal of a communal heating system.

We were impressed with the level of detail and information provided which ultimately allowed us to progress to agree the best solution which meets the criteria set out by Cloch for this project”
